Keep Thomas County Beautiful’ s storm drain marking program is a hands-on project for volunteers who are interested in helping to educate the public about water pollution prevention. Storm drains are part of the system that moves rainwater away from our homes, businesses, and roadways. Rain can wash garden chemicals, pet waste, motor oil, grass clippings and other pollutants from our yards, driveways, sidewalks, and all areas of land into our waterways.
To help prevent illegal dumping in storm drains, volunteers place markers on the drains as a visual reminder that the drains run directly to our creeks and rivers. The program is self-guided, using volunteers, and may be done by an individual or a group. You choose when to do it and the area to mark, which must be within Thomas County. KTCB will provide a marking kit with everything needed along with a brief demo of the process.
Placing medallions (like the one shown) onto storm drains is an easy process. Medallions are glued on or next to storm drains entry points. The process starts with using a wire brush to remove loose debris/dirt on the concrete or metal where the medallion will be placed. Then glue is placed on the back of the medallion. The back of the medallion has a guide for glue placement /amount. After placing the medallion, it will need to be held in place for about 15-30 seconds so that the glue can adhere to the surface.
If you are interested in volunteering to place storm drain markers, please contact the KTCB office to learn more and reserve a kit. Once the task has been completed, volunteers will receive a KTCB t-shirt or sport pack as a token of our appreciation.
