Community Teaching Garden

In conjunction with Keep Thomas County Beautiful (KTCB), Thomasville Community Resource Center (TCRC) is in the process of revitalizing the garden component of their property to function as a community teaching garden.  The teaching garden will have three main targeted outcomes:
  1. Provide food for those attending the TCRC program as well as the neighborhood surrounding TCRC, especially the seniors that live in the area.
  2. Hands-on experiential learning for students that will include garden activities;
  3. Educational outreach opportunities for garden related topics, including sustainability (rain barrel, composting, etc.,) pollinators and seasonality for planting purposes.

1st Steps
The goal is to begin putting into place a garden(s) that will include raised vegetable beds that are strong enough to support various age groups of children utilizing the gardens all year long. The beds also need to withstand seasonal weather. In addition to the raised beds we will also put in place pollinator gardens, a native plant section and food producing perennials such as berry, fruit and nut trees. The garden will be maintained by KTCB, TCRC and local non-profit groups and individual volunteers. If you are interested in Sponsorship opportunities or in volunteering please contact KTCB.

June 2022 - Installation of 1st Raised Bed

Bob Dyksterhouse, KTCB board member kicked off the project by marking the bed locations and installing a rain collection barrel.  Sponsorship for the 1st bed was received and Bob set about building and installing the first raised bed in the sweltering June sun.  Job well done Bob!
